Showing what it was like to “be there”.
When I began my photographic journey, I had no idea where it would lead me. Initially, I imagined that if I could be the “fly on the wall”, at a safe distance, apart and objective, whatever that is, I could depict truth. Ah, it’s not as simple as that. I already knew from my training in physics that there is no such thing as a completely objective observer, that my mere presence affects what I see and record with the camera, and that my choice of technology shapes its outcome.
I deal with this conundrum with awareness of my stake in my subjects, with understanding of the stake my client has in the project, and with the realization that I can make a difference.
